How to Cross-Check AI Answers
Cross-checking AI answers means testing whether an output survives independent review. The goal is not to ask one model to rephrase itself. The goal is to expose hallucinations, missing caveats and outdated facts before you rely on them.
The six-step method
Extract the exact claim instead of checking the whole answer at once

What good cross-checking looks like
Independent answers converge on the same claim, cite compatible evidence, and preserve the same caveats. Record model alignment and source support separately; neither replaces primary-source review.
What a warning looks like
Models disagree on dates, jurisdiction, source existence, numerical values or causal claims. Do not act until the disputed point is checked manually.
Check a claim, not just a fluent answer
Break a long answer into claims that can be tested. A model can be broadly useful while still getting one date, number, attribution or causal explanation wrong. Write down the exact statement, the time period, the jurisdiction and the consequence if it is false.
Evidence to request
Ask for the original document, publication date, source URL, method and the part of the source that supports the claim. A citation that does not contain the claim is not evidence.
Assumptions to expose
Ask what would change the answer, which facts are missing and whether the model is relying on a generic rule instead of your actual constraints.
When agreement and evidence conflict
Treat the conflict as unresolved. Several models can repeat the same outdated or popular claim, while a primary source can still contradict them. Prefer the current authoritative source, record the disagreement and ask a qualified professional when the consequence is medical, legal or financial.
